The Ford F-150 Lightning made a little more history this month, earning the 2023 MotorTrend Truck of the Year award in a unanimous vote. This is the second time in MT award history that an electric vehicle has won its category by securing every first-place vote, and the first time an electric truck has done so.

MT: F-150 Lightning ‘leads a new breed’

Despite the Rivian R1T winning the title of 2022 Truck of the Year, MotorTrend called the F-150 Lightning “the first EV pickup to directly appeal to the existing truck market.” MotorTrend’s Scott Evans added that where the R1T and options like the GMC Hummer EV feel like reimaginings, the F-150 Lightning better finds the sweet spot between what truck customers want and want in the future. .

A not insignificant element of it is its appearance. While Rivian and GMC trucks stand out more with flashy exteriors, Evans says integration is where Ford is headed.

“The F-150 Lightning is at the forefront of a new breed of electric vehicles designed specifically not to scream, ‘I’m green,’ as they roll silently down the road,” Evans wrote. He added that the F-150 Lightning “often looks like the traditional new F-150 on the road, job site or trail,” distinguishing itself from its ICE-powered siblings.

Of course, it’s not just about looks when it comes to a Ford F-150. MotorTrend unanimously decided on the F-150 Lightning as its choice for 2023 Truck of the Year because of its familiar combination of horsepower and torque, towing and hauling, durability, and innovation. It also gets high marks for electric truck essentials like range and charging speed as well as high-tech offerings like Intelligent Backup Power and BlueCruise hands-free.

F-150 Lighting gains value points despite price hikes

MotorTrend The Ford F-150 Lightning is also praised for its value proposition, noting that it is a desirable choice among other trucks despite the recent price increase. Although it was revealed a few days after the announcement that Ford raised the price of the F-150 Lightning again, the cost increase probably wasn’t enough to cost the truck even a single vote.

And by securing all the votes for the 2023 MotorTrend title Truck of the Year, the Ford F-150 Lightning reaffirms itself as the top choice in the fast-growing electric pickup segment. Between its launch in May and November, Ford sold 13,258 F-150 Lightning trucks. That, along with the success of the Mustang Mach-E, positioned the Blue Oval as the No. 2 EV brands in the United States in 2022.
