Samsung has gotten more competitive in the software update game

Samsung is the first Android manufacturer to promise four years of Android OS updates for its smartphones and tablets. It’s a move that’s encouraging other manufacturers, with OnePlus announcing a few weeks ago that some of its upcoming devices will receive four Android OS updates and security patches for five years. And now, Oppo, OnePlus’ parent company, is making the same promise. Or is it?

Oppo has announced that its flagships in the future will receive major OS updates and five years of security updates. At first glance, that seems like Samsung, but that’s not the case. While Samsung has promised four years of Android OS updates, Oppo has promised four Color OS Updates.

Color OS is Oppo’s equivalent of Samsung’s One UI overlay and has updates to the underlying Android version. With its update policy, Oppo phones will be released in the future to have four versions of the Color OS, and therein lies the problem.

Oppo may not promise what people think

Most importantly, Oppo makes no promises when it comes to updating the Android version. It only says that it will offer four updates to its regular program.

Currently, Oppo’s policy is to guarantee three new versions of Android so the new policy can mean that its devices will receive at least three new versions of Android instead of Color OS update. But in any case, Samsung’s leadership in innovation seems to be unstoppable.

It is not the fact that there are not four new Android OS promised by Oppo here. It is the fact that Oppo – and OnePlus too – does not apply its new policy to the devices that it sells. Samsung, on the other hand, has said that it will extend support for four Android OS upgrades to some Galaxy devices released in 2021. Also, Samsung’s policy applies to mid-range and flagship devices. .

Samsung’s update policy has not been successful

To summarize, owners of Galaxy phones and tablets and Samsung fans can rest assured that they will receive software support after the sale. Although manufacturers like OnePlus and Oppo are moving in the right direction by taking inspiration from Samsung, they are not imitating the Korean giant as much as their customers would hope, and Galaxy devices are the best choice for those who keep up-to-date.
