For several decades, FordThe F-Series is one of the best-selling vehicles in the United States. The first release of the F-150 Lightning marked the brand’s introduction to the electrified truck scene, gaining an edge over GM and Stellantis. Although it has long been off the market, the Ford F-150 Lightning continues to be one of the most important American vehicles of the twentieth century, paying tribute to its enduring predecessor.

Ford has announced some specific improvements for the 2023 model year, in addition to resuming orders for the F-150 Lightning. The base model of the all-electric vehicle now has an increased range of 10 miles, or a total of 240 miles. Pro Trailer Hitch Assist is now an option for the vehicle. This technology automatically manages steering, throttle, and brake inputs when towing. Avalanche Gray and Azure Grey, two additional colors, have also been added to the palette. The new shades replace Smoked Quartz, Atlas Blue, and Ice Blue Silver.

One downside of the F-150 Lightning is that it starts at $55,974 for the Pro version, which is a significant $12,000 price increase from its predecessor. And, due to supply chain issues and rising material costs, prices for more premium models have also risen significantly. This time, the new Ford F-150 Lightning confidently challenges the Chevrolet Silverado EV and the GMC Sierra EV.

Looking at the evolution of the popular pickup truck, it’s clear that the F-150 Lightning is more stylish than its conventional sibling. On the front fascia, the single headlight bar and futuristic front grille blend seamlessly with the rest of the angular look of the car. Black front and rear bumpers, dynamic bent LED headlights, a Carbon Black grille, and 18-inch wheels with black high gloss pockets are all included in the basic trim, which is impressive.

Wheels and tires increase in size up to 22 inches as you move up the range. Body-colored bumpers, a Geometric Grey-ion fine Satin Metallic grille, and unique front illumination are available on the XLT at an additional cost. In addition to getting 20-inch Dark Carbonized Gray alloys, the Lariat also gets a convenient motorized tailgate and LED box lighting. Its curb weight is around 6,015 lbs in its base form, but it can weigh up to 6,893 lbs in Platinum form, due to all the batteries.

In terms of dimensions, the 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning measures 232.7 inches long, 78.3 inches high, and 96 inches wide, and it rolls on a 145.5-inch wheelbase. Across the lineup, every model has a dual-motor configuration that drives all four wheels simultaneously with a single-speed automatic transmission. Compared to the Extended Range variant, which has 580 horsepower and the same torque, the Standard Range model has 452 horsepower and 775 lb-ft of torque.

With the more powerful engine, the F-150 Lightning Extended Range can sprint from 0 to 60 mph in under four seconds, completing the quarter-mile in just 12.7 seconds at 107 mph. The standard model can tow up to 7,700 lbs, while the Extended Range variant can tow 10,000 lbs, but only in XLT or Lariat form.

The F-150 also has some off-road stripes, with an approach angle of 24.4 degrees, a departure of 23.6 degrees, and a ramp break-over angle of 17.6 degrees. The F-150’s normal values, by contrast, are as much as 24.9/26.3/23.8 degrees, in part due to the gas-powered F-150’s availability in several body types. The F-150 Lightning has 8.4 inches of ground clearance, which is one inch less than the F-150. With that, it’s pretty clear that the traditionally powered F-150 is a great option for more demanding off-roading.

Whether you choose the luxurious Platinum or the work-ready Pro model, the cabin feels light and contemporary. Standard displays on base versions include a 12-inch touchscreen infotainment screen and a 12-inch digital productivity screen. Although the infotainment screen on the base-level car is smaller and there are some more hard plastics on the dashboard and vinyl seats, everything seems well-built. Even in the entry model, there are some nice standard amenities like dual-zone automatic temperature control and heated front seats. However, if you’re willing to pay more, you can also have ventilated leather seats and an 18-speaker Bang & Olufsen Unleashed sound system.

A basic AM/FM stereo, three years of trial navigation, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and the SYNC 4 operating system with improved automatic speech recognition are available on the Pro, along with a standard 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. SiriusXM with 360L is available on XLT and higher grades. The infotainment screen on the Lariat trim is larger, measuring 15.5 inches, and has a Bang & Olufsen sound system with HD Radio. The SYNC 4 infotainment system, as well as both screens, are intuitive and easy to use. The Platinum, with its 18-speaker Bang & Olufsen Unleashed sound system, has the best audio system.

The cabin of the Ford F-150 Lightning is incredibly spacious, with ample leg and headroom for both front and rear occupants. The F-150 Lightning’s high roofline makes getting in and out of the vehicle a joy for tall people.
