The Ford The Mustang and Chevrolet Camaro have had one of the longest rivalries in the muscle car market. 2024 Ford Mustang GT S650 Vs 2023 Chevrolet Camaro: Powertrain and Performance Elements
The respectable 6.2-liter, cam-in-block V8 that powers the Camaro produces 455 horsepower and 455 lb-ft of torque. Since they activate at 1,000 rpm earlier and have more torque than the current Mustang’s 420 lb-ft of torque, the next-generation Mustang may have some ground to make up.
The revised 5.0-liter V8 in the Mustang GT S650 still has a 3.63-inch bore and 3.65-inch stroke, making it the same displacement as the outgoing S550 engine. With a single throttle body and an indirect air box arrangement, that engine’s output was 460 horsepower and 420 lb-ft last year. Ford recently confirmed that the 2023 GT model will produce 480 horsepower.
The grille’s “nostrils” and the connecting rods serve as a direct feed for the new 5.0-liter dual 80 mm throttle body. This proves that the power is higher than the 450 horsepower of the current GT and can reach 470 horsepower, if not more.

It is a known myth that the upcoming 2024 Ford Mustang will be similar to the 2023 Chevy Camaro. The two vehicles are significantly different, despite the joke that there may be some element of truth. The design of the sixth-generation S550 clearly evolved from the S650 Mustang, but they were different enough mechanically and aesthetically to earn a second look. In contrast, the 2023 Camaro is essentially unchanged from the 2016 debut of its fifth-generation model.
The S650 Mustang GT has an overall length of 189.4 inches, a wheelbase of 107 inches, an overall width of 75.4 inches (up to the mirrors), and an overall height of 55 inches for the coupe and 54.8 inches for the convertible. Additionally, the track width is 64.7 inches in the rear and 62 inches in the front.
The Camaro SS has a shorter overall length of 188.3 inches, an overall width of 74.7 inches, a slightly longer wheelbase of 110.7 inches, and a lower overall height of 53.1 inches for both coupe and drop top models. The SS also features a track width of 62.9 inches in the rear and 1 inch narrower at 63 inches in the front.
Weights for the six-speed coupe and 10-speed automatic versions of the Camaro SS are 3,685 lbs and 3,747 lbs, respectively. The manual convertible weighs 3,932 lbs, while the automatic is 3,993 lbs. The 2024 Mustang GT coupe weighs 3,730 lbs with a manual transmission and 3,752 lbs with an automatic transmission. The manual convertible weighs 3,916 lbs, while the automatic is 3,932 lbs.

Both vehicles come standard with limited-slip differentials, six-speed manual and 10-speed automatic transmissions, with the option to add magnetic damping and six-piston Brembo front brake calipers. Those Brembos, however, are four-piston rears on the Camaro, whereas Ford hasn’t officially announced they’re an option on the Mustang GT.
When it comes to track eligibility, the Mustang GT’s driving modes are what set it apart from the Camaro SS. The S650 has an electronic line lock for burnouts, a lap timer function, track-focused apps, an acceleration timer, an accelerometer, a brake performance meter, and launch control – all accessible via a user-friendly its menu system. Furthermore, the new Mustang GT comes with OTA updates (dubbed as Ford Power-Up software updates) to potentially expand its features and settings.

Although both the Camaro and Mustang are four-seater muscle cars, the Camaro is unlikely to be a pleasant experience for rear passengers as they will only have 33.4 inches of headroom in the convertible and 33.5 inches of headroom in the coupe. Rear headroom in the GT, however, is slightly less confined at 34.5 inches.
Although, with about 29.9 inches of rear legroom, the Camaro beats the GT by about 0.9 inches. Camaro SS front passengers have 38.5 inches of headroom and 43.9 inches of legroom in both coupe and convertible models. In its coupe form, the 2024 Mustang GT offers front passengers 37.6 inches of headroom and 44.5 inches of legroom.
In terms of cargo capacity, the Mustang GT convertible can only fit 10.3 cubic feet of luggage, while the coupe can carry up to 13.3 cubic feet. It’s better than the Camaro, which has a trunk volume of just 9.1 cubic feet for the coupe and 7.3 cubic feet for the convertible.

It’s just sad that the Camaro is finally leaving the muscle car scene. When the GT first came in, it couldn’t stand a chance against the Camaro in terms of performance. Ford responded with an update, bringing it up to par while still providing more size and usability.
Then, Chevy did almost nothing with their refresh other than toning down the car’s appearance and abandoning the unreliable eight-speed transmission. Now, this comparison proves that the seventh-generation Mustang is clearly outclassed by the Camaro SS with more space, and all the contemporary technology you’d expect. And it will undoubtedly be a faster muscle car, thanks to platform improvements and increased horsepower. Remember, the Ford Mustang GT S650 won’t stand a chance against the Camaro’s ZL1 trim, especially with the release of the once mighty GT model.
