A homicide investigation is underway after a woman was fatally shot in a Merseyside pub on Christmas Eve.

She and three men were taken to hospital with gunshot wounds after the incident at the Lighthouse Inn in the village of Wallasey on Wirral shortly after 11.50pm.

The woman was later declared dead, and her family is being supported by specially trained officers.

A number of other people were also injured, police said.

The area has been cordoned off while officers speak to witnesses and examine CCTV footage.

Detective Superintendent Dave McCaughrean of Merseyside Police said: “This investigation is at a very early stage, and we understand that this is a truly shocking and devastating incident to have taken place in a busy area full of young people just before Christmas Day.

“We have a number of officials in Wallasi Village who are conducting extensive inquiries to understand what really happened and take immediate action.

“A woman has tragically lost her life over Christmas while many people are receiving treatment in hospital, and our thoughts and condolences are with the victim’s family.

“I would ask anyone who was at the lighthouse in Wallasi village last night who witnessed the incident or who has mobile or CCTV footage to contact us as a matter of urgency as they may have information which is vital to our investigation.

“We believe the gunman left the pub car park in a dark colored vehicle – possibly a dark colored Mercedes, shortly after the shooting, and we are keen for any sightings to contact us immediately.”

Anyone with information is asked to DM @MerPolCC or @CrimestoppersUK anonymously on 0800 555 111 quoting log 1044 of Saturday 24 December.
