India is one of the top targets of cybercriminals looking to steal sensitive data that they can sell on the Dark Web. About 12% of all unique user data found in the cybercrime market belongs to India, according to a NordVPN report, released this month. Internet security company Trend Micro also found in a survey, published in September, that 75% of Indian companies have been affected by ransomware attacks since 2019.
Critical infrastructure providers, especially companies in the healthcare sector, are seen as high-value targets by cybercriminals and state-sponsored hackers, so attacks on them are becoming more intense. India’s healthcare sector faces 1.9 million cyber attacks This year until last month, according to the findings of the Internet security organization CyberPeace Foundation.

Ransomware attack on AIIMS
Last month, one of India’s leading government hospitals, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi was hit by a ransomware attack that disrupted most of its online services for more than two weeks. The hospital was forced to shut down its servers and switch to manual operations for inpatient and outpatient services.
India’s cyber security agency’s nodal Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) found in its investigation that five servers were compromised due to improper network partitioning and nearly 1.3 terabytes of data were encrypted by hackers, MoS for IT and Electronics Rajeev Chandrasekhar told the Rajya Sabha in December. 16. The FIR filed by the Delhi Police claims that the attack may have originated from China. Attacks on AIIMS and similar large government hospitals are significant as they could compromise the personal health information of important individuals including members of parliament, and government officials including those in the defense forces.
Brief attack on Safdarjung Hospital
After the cyber attack on AIIMS, officials at Safdarjung Hospital, another government hospital in Delhi, told Hindustan Times that they received a cyber attack in mid-November, however, it was not that serious. They said the hospital’s servers were down for about 12 hours due to the attack. However, the National Information Center (NIC) can restore the system on the same day. The attack was detected on November 14 after hospital staff found they could not get into their system.
Oil India cyber attack, disruption of services
In April, government oil supplier Oil India Ltd reported a cyber attack on its information technology (IT) system at a facility in Duliajan in Assam. According to media reports, the hackers demanded a ransom worth $7.5 million in Bitcoins from Public Minister (PSU). Oil India later filed an FIR with the Assam Police in which it claimed that the company’s network, servers, and customers’ computers suffered problems that caused huge financial losses, although drilling and production operations remained unaffected.
Indian Oil is one of the largest oil suppliers in the country and supplies crude oil and refined petroleum products through cross-border pipelines. It also produces liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
Tata Power cyber attack, data theft
In October, Tata Power, one of the country’s largest energy suppliers serving 12 million people, said its IT systems had been hit by a cyber attack. The company said at the time that it had taken measures to “pull and restore” the system. Although the company did not share any specific details about the impact, it ensured that all important operating systems were working.
Later, the Russian-linked Hive ransomware gang claimed responsibility for the attack on Tata Power and leaked employee data it stole during the attack. The stolen information, posted on Hive’s Dark Web site, includes Aadhaar card numbers, phone numbers, home addresses, tax account details, and salary information.
