The VI Water and Power Authority announced late Tuesday that it had successfully arranged for the delivery of diesel to allow normal power generation at the Randolph Harley Power Plant in St. Thomas and the Richmond Power Plant on St. Croix.
VAPA said that due to the switch to 100 percent diesel operation, “there will be a sole reliance on older generation units which may lead to reduced reliability.” Authorities said Aggrekos and Vartsilas, the newer generators, would not be operational due to their propane needs, indicating that VAPA had failed to reach an agreement with Vitol and failed to secure a new propane supplier.
“As the older generation units in operation are delayed in maintenance, this can increase their unreliability after the transition,” says VAPA.
Authorities are asking for “community understanding during this transition as every effort is made to ensure there is no blackout across the territory and that our most vulnerable communities are prioritized.”
“Open, transparent communication continues to be of utmost importance to VAPA as it restores trust in the community,” VAPA further stated.
