Just finished a year ago, the Biden White House released a sweeping order regarding vehicle emissions. In working toward administration emission reduction goalsthe order ordered that government vehicle fleets begin moving to EVs — including organization with best paint scheme in total government. That’s right, the US Forest Service is going electric, starting small test fleet of Ford F-150 Lightnings.

According to a report from Outside of Onlinethe Forest Service got three F-150 Lightning electric pickup trucks for “field testing.” The trio will be used as an EV audit for the service, to determine if the trucks can meet the group’s demanding green needs.
Outside Online spoke with a representative for the Forest Service, Jason Kirchner, who said that the F-150 Lightning is currently the only electric pickup truck eligible for government purchase under the current set of rules. In more electric pickups coming down the pipelineThis trio of Lightnings won’t be its only test specific chassis — they’ll set the benchmark for every battery-powered pickup to come.
Kirchner also gave Outside Online some details on the specific trucks used in the test: Simple, standard, fleet-spec Lightnings. The Forest Service doesn’t seem to have asked for any kind of extended range or suspension trick, which could set an interesting precedent for electric pickup buyers. After all, if the Forest Service doesn’t require rock-crawling shocks or four-figure range, why should you?
The Forest Service did not specify the duration of the studyingthough one would expect it to take longer. Determining the suitability of the vehicle at all times, and by vehicle own life cycle of wear and abuse, will take more than a quick test drive.
