UK production outfit Home Team of Dominic Buchanan and Bennett McGee has inked a first-look deal with Universal International Studios, a division of Universal Studios Group.
The deal will see the home team develop and produce premium television projects for the UK and international markets, with a focus on championing underrepresented creatives and new voices.
This project includes Hudselo, written by Emily Robson – an exploration of female friendship against coastal north-east England. There is also a period fantasy series about Ya Asantewa, a warrior queen of the Ashanti Kingdom (now part of modern Ghana), co-created by Kara Smith of Amazon. Anansi Boys and Rienkej Atoh, whose previous credits include the BBC series Noughts + Cross, with McGhee. Smith also serves as writer on the project, and it will be produced with Atoh’s company Saw & Saw Productions.
Buchanan and McGee formed the home team in September 2020 with support from Calculus Capital through the BFI EIS Content Fund. The company’s slate spans TV and film.
Prior to Home Team, Buchanan co-produced the 2018 Sundance premiere of Colette, directed by Wash Westmoreland for Bold Films. McGee produced the 2020 Berlinale premiere of Bassam Tariq Mowgli MowgliStarring Riz Ahmed.
