Sixteen-year-old Nika Shakrami, last heard from by a friend while being chased down the street during protests in Tehran, was identified by her parents nine days later at a morgue.
Hananah Kia, a 23-year-old hairdresser, recently engaged, was on her way home from a dentist appointment in Nowshahr.
Hadis Najafi, a 22-year-old video blogger.
Mahsa Mogouyi, 18 years old, in central Fouladshahr.
Ghazaleh Chalabi, 33 years old – was shot in the head while filming protests in his hometown. Her last words, which were caught on film, were “Don’t be afraid”.
Mr. President, High Commissioner, Colleagues,
We are all familiar with the tragic story of Mahsa Gina Amini. However – these names are some of the other women and girls who have lost their lives at the hands of Iranian security services since Mahsa’s death. Today we don’t have enough time to pay tribute to everyone by name. But I will send a clear message to his family, to his friends that his death will not be forgotten.
Let us recall:
In which more than 350 people were killed.
Countless children who have lost their lives.
Currently, thousands of people have been detained.
Sentence people to death.
All just to exercise their rights to freedom of expression and assembly.
Unfortunately, this is not a one-off. Let us also remember those who died in the violent crackdown on protests in 2019 and the thousands more killed and detained in violation of their human rights over the years.
Today let’s send a clear message: that Iran must stop suppressing the voices of women and girls; that appalling state-led violence must end; That the victims should get justice.
And that this Council stands firmly behind Iran’s girls, women, mothers and daughters – supporting their call for women. life Independence. Zhan. Zendegi. Freedom.
