The blackout hit many homes in Sussex, Kent, Essex, London and Surrey.
In the Surrey region, UK Power Networks reported power problems in towns such as Chobham, Walton, Guildford and Chertsey, but other areas were also affected. The power cuts come as the country is set to be hit by -10 arctic freezes and snow.
Experts told households to brace themselves for power cuts and warned that up to four inches of snow could fall within days.
In the Surrey region alone, 28 postcodes and more than 250 homes were left without electricity. UK Power Networks noted that the disruption occurred because “an underground electricity cable in our high voltage network has failed, causing a power cut to the entire area.”
UK Power Networks said on Twitter that the underground cable fault affected more than 2,684 properties. They had sent engineers to the affected area to assess the damage and were awaiting a timescale from the engineers.
They also provided additional support and issued a helpline number, 0800 31 63 105 for people to call for help.
The outage has hit many regions that will hit a maximum of 3°C, thus causing a lot of concern for people due to cold weather and snowfall.
