Hindman, Key. (WYMT) – Like many buildings in Knott County, the UK June Buchanan Medical Clinic was devastated by floodwaters in July.
“Whenever you practice in the field of medicine, you know when you go into it that you’re going to be a servant to your community and your patients, and you always want to be there for them, but this was so helpless. Because there was nothing we could do,” said Dr. Juanita Hughes, a physician at the clinic.
As one of the only clinics in Knott County that provides primary care, staff were worried about how they would continue to serve patients.
“Thankfully, we have a sister clinic in Hazard and they were able to open the doors for us and we were able to see our patients out of that facility,” Dr. Hughes said.
After four months of repairs and replacing equipment lost in the flood, the June Buchanan Clinic will open its doors on Monday.
“For our staff, it feels like we are coming home. It’s a very close-knit group, very caring and compassionate to the patients we care for, and we want to treat them like family,” said Jeff Fugate, family nurse practitioner at the clinic. “We want them to understand that They will receive the same treatment we would give our loved ones when they walk in the door, and we want to make sure they have the best care possible.”
The clinic staff hopes to continue to be a pillar of the Hindman community since the clinic opened in 1974.
“This clinic has been here for a long time and is very important to the community, so we are extremely excited to be able to come back and serve our patients,” said Dr. Hughes said.
The clinic will offer its normal primary care and lab services starting Monday, but its radiology department will not reopen until later this month.
