During the John Calipari era with the Kentucky Wildcats, one thing that has become known is that the Cats do not play zone.
During his tenure, UK has occasionally mixed it up, but it’s not something head coaches do regularly.
Until this season, potentially.
On tonight’s call-in show, Calipari dropped a notable statement, saying the team practiced zone all day today.
John Calipari says Kentucky spent the entire practice today playing zones

Anyone who follows UK men’s basketball knows Calipari hates the zone defense with a passion, partly because it’s easier to know who’s at fault when the man-to-man defense breaks down and because that’s not the defense used in the NBA. is Calipari markets UK as the best school to prepare players for the next level, so playing in multiple zones would contradict that belief.
This season, the Cats have shown flashes of brilliance on defense, but have also had their fair share of struggles. The playing zone will also allow Coach Cal to have players in there who may not be the best defenders but bring versatility offensively.
Who knows if the Cats will play that much, but it’s a fair guess that Kentucky will play at least a few zone possessions against Bellarmine on Tuesday.
