UK Basketball News: UK fined for playing Dontai Allen while ineligible, according to report | Daily News Byte

Earlier this week, Western Kentucky announced that Dontae Allen has been ruled out due to a problem that arose while he was with the Kentucky Wildcats.

“Dontai Allen will be unavailable while eligibility matters related to his previous school and conference are clarified,” the school said in a statement. “We hope the situation will be resolved soon.”

Now, Western Kentucky head coach Rick Stansbury has addressed the situation in detail, saying UK played Allen while he was ineligible last season before entering the transfer portal and committing to the Hilltoppers.

Apparently, the redshirt junior had grade issues that made him ineligible during the 2021-22 fall semester at Lexington.

“Kentucky played him (Allen) seven games when he was ineligible,” Stansbury said. “His coach didn’t know that. Did not know compliance. So how does a child know that?

“No one can say that the child is to blame for not getting his grades. He didn’t know. If the adults in the room didn’t know, he didn’t know.

Stansbury also revealed that Kentucky was penalized for playing Allen in seven games while ineligible, so Allen will now have to sit out seven games at Western Kentucky.

“Kentucky got their punishment. They were fined $500 per game for seven games ($3,500 total) but now we are the ones taking the punishment. It is the child who is being punished.”

Sadly, Allen played a whopping 25 minutes in those seven games, but it was enough to keep him out of contention at his new school for the time being.
