YouTuber LegitStreetCars continues to fix the Mustang but after numerous issues, the neglected vehicle may not be worth it.
Finding and rescuing an abandoned muscle or classic car sounds like fun, at least for motorheads. That said, the amount of work that goes into restoring an abandoned car to working condition is almost insane.
YouTube channel LegitStreetCars brings you a video where they now look under the hood of the abandoned Ford Mustang SVT Cobra because the engine doesn’t want to move. It takes a ton of fluid and a lot of muscle to get the engine out of jams, and then there’s more work to do to get it up. That is if, the Mustang cooperates in the first place.
This 850-Horsepower Cobra Mustang Has Sat Untouched for 20 Years
Alex Palmeri at LegitStreetCars seemed excited to get his hands on a 1999 Ford Mustang SVT Cobra that made 850 hp and only had 17,000 miles on the odometer. They called it the “Mystery Mustang” because it had been abandoned for 20 long years before the LSC finally got their hands on it.
It looks good on the outside but under the hood, it’s a different story given that the engine refuses to rev. So the team first injected a mystery fluid, which was a combination of transmission fluid and penetrating oil, which likely loosened the rusty pistons.
After about five hours of soaking, the team removes the mud and the bottom is as thick as fool’s gold. Palmeri tries to turn the pistons by hand, but they are stubborn. Brute strength probably didn’t do anything, so the team stopped.
They still have full confidence in the restoration project though, because Mustang parts are cheap.
This SVT Cobra needs a lot of work
The team also put some kind of rust-targeting solution, called Evaporus, on the engine because Palmeri felt the engine was on the whole. They let the fluid sit in the engine overnight and in the meantime, they replace the fuel tank.
Palmeri is not a fan of the engine as he thinks this SVT Cobra engine is the worst Ford has ever made because they lie about horsepower, and are very difficult to obtain and repair. Meanwhile, the next morning, it was clear that the engine needed replacing, and this is probably why the owner parked it for 20 years. They had a few breakthrough moments in between but had to give up because the machine refused to move.
Palmeri signs off the video with a look of defeat because he needs a new engine, which isn’t as cheap as other Mustang parts.
