LONDON
Britain and the US struck a new energy deal on Wednesday that will allow the US to export more gas to the UK amid an energy crisis caused by the war.
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and US President Joe Biden announced the “Energy Security and Affordability Partnership” with the aim of reducing Russian energy exports, stabilizing energy markets and increasing cooperation in energy efficiency, nuclear power and renewable energy sources.
Although the UK did not depend on large quantities of Russian gas before the Russo-Ukraine war, it has been hurt by rising prices on global markets as its European neighbors rush to fill their storage facilities and compete for other supplies.
“Under the agreement, the US will seek to export at least 9-10 billion cubic meters of liquefied natural gas (LNG) over the next year through UK terminals, more than doubling the level exported in 2021 and capitalizing on the UK’s leading import infrastructure.” “, stated in the written statement.
Together we oppose (Russian President Vladimir) Putin,” Sunak wrote on Twitter. “Together, the UK and the US will ensure the global price of energy and the security of our national supply will never again be manipulated by the whims of a failed regime.”
He said the deal would lower prices for British consumers and help end Europe’s dependence on Russian energy once and for all.
The leaders also agreed to work on green investments, saying the partnership would include international investment in clean energy technologies, from offshore wind to carbon capture.
“We have the natural resources, industry and innovative thinking we need to create a better, freer system and accelerate the clean energy transition,” Sunak said.
According to ship tracking service ICIS LNG Edge, Britain imported 3.9 cubic meters of LNG from the US in 2021, 26% of total LNG imports.
