THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Thiruvananthapuram native Dilesh Vishwanath, who is pursuing MS in Project Management from Liverpool University, has been selected for the National Union of Students, a confederation of around 600 student unions in the United Kingdom. The 37-year-old Dilesh was unanimously elected to the national students’ meet and secured the highest number of votes for the Mukti meet under the ‘Black’ category.
NUS uses black as a political term to represent students of African, Arab, Asian and Caribbean descent. Dilesh, who hails from Pettah, has been a team leader since his school days at St. Joseph’s School. He recalls that it was his pre-degree days at Mar Ivanios College that inspired him to participate in student politics.
Later, he did his BTech from CUSAT and worked in Gujarat and then in Dubai.
Dilesh wanted to study his Masters from abroad without burdening his parents. His late father, Thoppil Viswanathan, was a Thiruvananthapuram Corporation councilor and his mother Shobhana is a homemaker.
After working for a ship-building company in Dubai for 15 years, Dilesh moved to the UK. This was when he realized the difficulties faced by international students. Inflation has caused the cost of living in the UK to rise. I am financially stable, but every day I see the plight of international students.
Despite having part-time jobs, they bear great hardships. So I decided to participate in the student body elections. I want to bring about a change by taking up the issues of foreign students with NSU and the UK government,” Dilesh said The New Indian Express on the phone.
Dilesh will be at the heart of the decision-making process, setting the direction and tone of the organization’s work and making changes at the national level. A Liberation Meet will be held in UK next April.
