BJP’s over-reliance on ‘Double Engine Ki Sarkar’ and the growing insurgency in the state unit gave victory to the grand old party. A much-needed revival of the Congress is due you shout factor. According to the Lokniti-CSDS poll after the poll, when voters were asked which issue was most important to them during the vote, without further examination of any options, more than two-fifths spontaneously said development.
In the 2017 election, the share of those who mentioned development as the main issue was only 19%, bringing the total increase in the current election to 42%.
The findings also show that voters had mixed feelings about the government’s performance over the past five years. While the government was seen as performing well on key parameters of governance, people were more likely to be critical on issues such as roads, health and education.
When asked whether the electricity situation in the country has improved or worsened in the past 5 years, three quarters answered yes. Their opinion of drinking water was slightly less favorable, with more than two-thirds reporting an improvement. Voters were less impressed with road conditions due to poor road infrastructure and connectivity, with over 25% of villages without road links. Nonetheless, they are also more likely to believe that the situation has improved rather than worsened.
However, when it comes to assessing the state of state schools and hospitals, while state schools fared better, the state of state hospitals was at the heart of dissatisfaction. The health infrastructure in Himachal Pradesh is under a lot of pressure. With a shortage of doctors, poor road connectivity and a lack of basic medical infrastructure, the problem of access to health services in the hills does not end well.
Right from the start, BJP banked on ‘Double Engine Ki Sarkar’ to which, when voters were asked their opinion, more than two-fifths answered in the affirmative. Despite this, the Congress was voted into power, working on local agendas. Development was the most important determinant during the polls, followed by rising prices and unemployment, overshadowing the BJP’s ‘Double Engine Ki Sarkar’ contest.
