The Mahindra Scorpio N SUV, launched in the Indian market on August 19, 2022 and the company’s best-selling vehicle, is the latest Mahindra SUV to receive a Global NCAP crash test with a five-star rating. It became the third Indian-made SUV, after the Skoda Kushaq and Volkswagen Taigun in October 2022, to get the top rating under the new automotive safety test protocol.
NCAP’s updated Global NCAP protocol assesses frontal and side impact protection for all models tested, Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Pedestrian Protection and Side Impact Protection ratings are also required for vehicles with the highest star rating.
The Scorpio N scored 29.25 out of 34 in the adult occupant protection test, giving it a 5-star rating. GNCAP testers rated the protection offered by the Mahindra Scorpio N to the head and neck of the driver and passenger as good. However, the chest protection of the driver and passenger is shown as a frame.
According to the new test procedure, in the side impact test with an unusual barrier, Scorpio N shows good protection to the occupants with a score of 16 points out of a possible seventeen. Mahindra SUV gets ‘OK’ rating for pole side impact test; However, the occupant’s chest area was rated ‘weak’.
GNCAP’s tester notes mention that the bodyshell and footwell area of Scorpio N are stable and can withstand further loads.
Child Occupant Crash Test Score: 3-star rating
With a score of 28.93 out of 49 in the child occupant protection test, the Scorpio earns a 3-star rating here. This includes 4.93 points out of 12 for the installation of CRS (Child Restraint System) and a maximum dynamic score of 24.
GNCAP tested the Scorpio N with dummies of an 18-month-old and a 3-year-old child, both seated rear-facing. They are placed in the car using i-size anchors and support legs, and both help prevent head impacts in frontal crashes. CRS also provides full protection in side effects.
Testers also noted that the SUV has ISOFIX anchor points on the outer rear seats in the second row.
Commenting on the Mahindra Scorpio N’s performance, Alejandro Furas, Secretary General of Global NCAP said, “Global NCAP commends Mahindra on its continued commitment to safety, achieving five stars for adult occupant protection under our new demanding crash test protocol.”
David Ward, Executive Chairman of the Towards Zero Foundation added, “Indian manufacturers like Mahindra have clearly demonstrated their commitment to improving vehicle safety performance. This is very welcome and we hope to maintain this good momentum when the Bharat NCAP is launched next year.”
What are the new GNCAP rules?
Under Global NCAP’s new NCAP protocol, a vehicle receives a 5-star rating only if it secures the required score while also complying with GNCAP’s ESC, pedestrian protection, side impact pillar and seat belt warning specifications.
It is also a bit difficult to compare vehicles tested under the old protocol with vehicles tested under the new one, because the entire process has been revised. Star ratings under the old protocol reflect performance in frontal crash testing, however, star ratings under the new protocol reflect more comprehensive protection that takes into account side impacts as well as active safety features such as ESC, which help prevent accidents from happening in the first place.
