This means that Bapeten had to be ready to issue a license whenever a request was made.
Yogyakarta (ANTARA) – The government has set a target of realizing the construction of a nuclear power plant in 2039 to help the country achieve its goal of net zero emissions and national energy resilience, the Indonesian Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency (Bapeten) announced.
“According to the energy transition scheme presented at the nuclear energy meeting, the target is 2039,” Bapeten director of nuclear installation and material control Haendra Subekti said in Yogyakarta on Saturday.
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has prepared a scheme for net zero emissions and discussed it with the Ministry of Environment and Forestry this year, he said at a discussion on “preparing nuclear power plants as a new and renewable energy option to achieve net zero emissions and energy self-reliance ” at the Gadjah Mada University (UGM) University Club.
In principle, the permit for the construction of a nuclear power plant is provided for by Government Regulation No. 5 of 2021 on the operation of risk-based businesses, he said.
“This means that Bapeten had to be ready to issue a permit whenever an application is submitted. Let’s say, if it is submitted tomorrow, then we will evaluate and review it tomorrow as well,” he said.
Bapeten has so far prepared a series of regulations on nuclear safety infrastructure, from the assessment of the planned location for the nuclear power plant, its construction to its trial operation, he said.
The location for the nuclear power plant must meet the conditions of not being built in a seismic zone, among other things, he said.
“Bapeten’s nuclear safety infrastructure regulation is pretty complete,” he said.
Bapeten must ensure that the construction of the nuclear power plant complies with the stated project, he said.
“After the construction is completed, there will be a trial operation of the nuclear power plant to see its performance until it works as expected,” he said.
