The Game Awards 2022 crowned Marvel Snap as the winner of Best Mobile Game, but it was an empty win. In addition to Apex Legends, the rest of the selected items are anti-customer funds that encourage more than breaking stereotypes. While we think Marvel Snap is a winner, the list of nominees in 2022 is even better.
Why does Marvel Snap need to win?
Before we dig into the rest of the games for an award, we’re going to give Second Dinner Studios a round of games. In our review, we appreciate how Marvel Snap brings new life into the collectible card game (CCG) genre, avoiding the bloat that plagues so many. It’s easy to learn, and its simplicity hides the richness of the complex and beautiful game.
Marvel Snap deserves a win because it ticks all the boxes for a great mobile game while bringing something new to its genre. It’s definitely a game that won’t break your bank, and we can’t recommend it enough. But there is more competition.
Is Marvel Snap the best mobile game of the year?
Open Twitter and search for “The Game Awards,” but make sure you’re prepared to endure the fire. Defining the “best” of anything is difficult, and in a field as diverse and polarizing as video games, it’s impossible. Everyone has their position, and for those who think that Marvel Snap isn’t a winner, I’m sure your arguments are valid.
But despite the lack of performance, there is no harm in trying to define the best mobile game. It’s good fun, why not? But of course, we can’t line up every mobile game of 2022 and compare them at once; impossible! It is better to have a list of options and decide the best one from there. But these options will give voters a wider range of games, which the Game Awards fail to do.
Most of the selected items are a showcase of all the awesome things about mobile gaming.
A good short list of options gives a choice of games. Games that show how good they are, innovate, and show people that solid gaming isn’t all about microtransactions and loot boxes! And what did we get?
Diablo Immortal? it’s true? A fun, addictive game from the franchise while draining your wallet. The most appropriate award is for Most Controversial, but to be included in the list of nominees for the best games of the year is a shame.
Genshin Impact and Tower of Fantasy also made the list. Do we both need it? While I know a lot of people are really enjoying Genshin Impact, relying on gacha mechanics and gameplay copied from The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild doesn’t make it feel like it. what makes a mobile game great, and the game won the ultimate award. years old. Still, I can’t really begrudge its existence as an option; it is very popular. On the other hand, Tower of Fantasy built its brand around the killer Genshin Impact and failed miserably. Why on earth?
Finally, Apex: Legends. The only other game on the list that deserves a nomination. Although it relies on loot boxes and microtransactions to make money, it’s a solid port of its PC counterpart that’s a lot of fun, despite some iffy controls.
See some common themes among the options? Iron boxes. Microtransactions. Play for free. Online multiplayer. Even Marvel Snap, a game I play every day, features annoying mechanics that plague many mobile games. While I expected one or two of these games to be seen as picks, the fact that all five dance with the same boring mobile game mantra is a disservice to mobile gaming.
What other games are there to choose from?
I do not claim the authority to declare the best mobile games of 2022. (That said, watch out for our favorites later this month!) platform is.
Found Paradise
Although it was an older release on PC, the mobile port released this year is one of the best RPGs on mobile. It’s everything an RPG should be, exciting, impactful, and lacking in microtransactions, which is basically everything that Genshin Impact isn’t.
Team Rocket: Sideswipe
This game is a masterclass in creating a solid version of a PC or console game, and although it was launched at the end of Dec. 2021, he can easily make the list. While Apex: Legends Mobile tries to recreate its big brother, Sideswipe has given a new version that can capture the spirit of the same difference. Sure, it has microtransactions, but its 3D sidescrolling aspect makes it a simple choice.
Ports of Feral Interactive
I know it’s not a joke but bear with me. Feral Interactive is one of the leading gaming companies, creating Mac, Linux, iOS, and Android ports of popular PC games. Thanks to them, you can play Alien: Isolation, one of the best horror games around, on your phone. These ports are an important part of mobile gaming and are easy to choose.
In fact, there are tons of mobile games out there that offer new ways to watch mobile gaming. So, where are they?
A diverse list can help break down stereotypes
Mobile gaming has grown exponentially in recent years. Today you can download ports of AAA titles that work well or lose many indie games in the Play Store. You can play for years without seeing a single microtransaction or loot box and you will know that the arcade game is not a free game of ads and cheap advertising games.
There are random nominees in all The Game Awards categories. However, it is disappointing to see that the mobile gaming sector is reduced to titles that, in one way or another, reflect the negative stereotypes that we associate with mobile gaming.
Instead, Marvel Snap will give it more press. Because while it sounds triumphant, it’s good fun.
