Cool & casual

Externally, there’s no mistaking the Tiago EV for anything else because it doesn’t look that different from its regular counterpart. But to mark its green credentials, it has some unique exterior elements – for example, the grille here is completely blank for obvious reasons, and you’ll also notice light blue accents along with EV badges all over the car. The model you see here is the top variant, so it’s finished in black ORVMS, a black roof and 14-inch Hyperstyle wheels – these aren’t alloy wheels, in case you were wondering. There are some fun color options on offer like Teal Blue, Midnight Plum, and Tropical Mist, which is what you have here. Overall, the Tiago EV is a good-looking car, but it doesn’t look particularly modern or futuristic.

Inside, it’s more or less the same story. The cabin layout and dashboard design is similar to the regular Tiago, but there are a few key changes – the top gets a leather upholstery that looks and feels more premium, while the gearshift has been replaced with a rotary knob. Now it looks cool, but I found it a bit uncomfortable to work with as it has lag and doesn’t feel natural to use. On the center console, you have quick access buttons, including a button to raise or lower the brake shift.

Power and torque outputs differ slightly – the mid-range model is rated at 45kW (60bhp) / 110Nm and the long-range at 55kW (74bhp) / 114Nm. As we’ve come to expect from Tata, the ride and handling balance of the Tiago EV is spot on. Because it is an EV with a heavy battery, the spring rate has been reworked (stiff) compared to the regular Tiago. The ride doesn’t feel heavy at low speeds, but it never Get uncomfortable or bouncy. As the speed increases, the ride quality improves and it’s a much better experience. Handling is neutral for the most part. Not to say that it is a driver’s pleasure, but it steers and turns in a predictable manner. You’re tempted to rush around every corner because of its size and lovely EV performance. However, it feels its weight around the corners if you turn in at stupid speeds – the understeer set at the beginning of the tire screams for mercy. The steering is comfortable at all times but it feels lifeless in absolute feedback.

While performance and ride and handling are Tiago’s strong suit, its range is not as good as advertised. We drove the car for a full day in a mix of driving conditions – city traffic, highways, roads. Except once or twice when we hit triple digits, we maintained a steady cruising speed of 80km/h on the highway, and in traffic, I was overly cautious and gentle with the throttle. Charging time for the Tiago EV varies from 57 minutes to around 9 hours, depending on the type of charger you are using. A DC 50Kw public charger will charge the battery from 10 to 80% within an hour, while a standard AC 3.3Kw charger will take 6 hours and 20 minutes to do the same. An optional 7.2 KW AC home charger will reduce charging time to approximately three and a half hours.
