NEW DELHI: Tata Power and Tata Motors on Monday announced a project partnership to develop a 7 MWp rooftop solar project at Tata Motors’ plant in Chikhali, Pune, making the facility the largest solar project in India.
This is the third phase of the MWp solar energy project in a joint facility developed by the two companies. A 10 MWp was installed earlier.
The two also signed a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) for the project.
It is expected that the installation will be able to produce 23 million units of electricity, reducing carbon dioxide by 5.23 million tons. It is equivalent to planting 8.36 million trees in a lifetime.
“Tata Motors has been working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to achieve the Net Zero Emission target. With the new agreement to install a 7 MWp Roof Top Solar Power Plant in our Pune plant in association with Tata Power, we will move closer to the goal of 100% renewable energy. After commissioning this capacity, we will become the largest solar installation in India, said Rajesh Khatri, Vice President, Operations, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd.
Tata Motors produced 92.39 million kWh of renewable electricity in 2222, accounting for nearly 19.4% of total energy consumption. The company plans to focus on renewable energy sources to achieve the goal of having 100% renewable energy by 2030.
“India’s largest solar project at Tata Motors’ Pune plant is a testament to our shared goal of going green in our business. The project reinforces Tata Power’s position as one of India’s leading renewable energy players, providing significant value to its partners through project execution capabilities and technical expertise,” said Mr. Gurinder Singh Sandhu, Head – New Business Services, Tata Power.
Tata Power has one of the world’s largest rooftops (16MW) at a single location at Radhasoami Satsang Beas (RSSB), Amritsar; 2.67MW at Cochin International Airport; One of the world’s largest solar powered cricket stadiums – Cricket Club of India (CCI) with a capacity of 820.8 kWp; Unique installation of vertical solar farm (120kW) at Dell Technologies at Bangalore and 1.4MW floating solar at Tata Chemicals, Nellore. In addition, Tata Power is undertaking an extensive Indian residential rooftop project to make people aware of the benefits of saving through solar energy.
