Tata Power, a leading power generation company in India, confirmed that it was hit by a cyber attack.
In a brief statement released on Friday, the Mumbai-based company said the attack affected some IT systems.
“The company has taken steps to retrieve and restore the system. All important operating systems are working; however, as abundant precautionary measures, limited access and preventive checks have been put in place for employees and customers facing the doors and touch points,” it said in its document (PDF) to the local stock market.
Tata Power has not disclosed any details on this matter. When asked by TechCrunch, the PR representative refused to answer questions related to the nature of the attack and the impact on the organization, and refused to say that any data was stolen. “As mentioned in the statement, the company has taken steps to retrieve and restore the system. All important operating systems are working,” the representative said.
The company produces, transmits and retails energy in South Asia and aims to increase the share of clean energy to 60% within 5 years from about 1/3 now, with the goal of being net zero in 2045. The Indian government has highlighted the cyber security of the country’s electricity grid as a challenge in its public statements. A report by US-based cyber security firm Recorded Future in April alleged that Chinese state-backed hackers were targeting India’s energy sector in a long-term scheme. Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Arindam Bagchi responded to the report and said that the country did not raise the issue. This depends on China, according to media reports.
