Tata Motors is the undisputed leader in India’s EV segment, with three options currently available. A new report claims that the company is preparing to release another mid-size electric SUV, the Tata Punch EV.

Head of Marketing for Tata Motors’ Passenger Vehicle Business Unit, Vivek Srivastava, has reported that the Punch EV is on its way. However, the executive did not reveal more details about the car. As HT Auto mentions, this will be the company’s second electric SUV after the Nexon and also the cheapest in the market.

Rumored Tata Punch EV features, range, and price

While most of the car’s specifications are still under wraps, it is expected that Tata Motors may use the ALFA platform for the Punch EV. In terms of design, the EV could be similar to its ICE sibling, which is currently operating on Indian roads. But customers can still expect an EV badge on the body of the vehicle and some minor improvements in the interior to support the electric system.

Tata Motors will reportedly use the same 26 kWh battery as the Tigor electric sedan. This should give the car a range of up to 300km on a full charge, while support for DC fast charging should make it an excellent choice in the crowded electric SUV market.

Tata Punch SUV (Petrol)

The EV should have decent performance, too, courtesy of a 55 kW electric motor (PMS), delivering 74 BHP and 170 Nm of peak torque. HT Auto estimates that the Tata Punch EV could be priced at an extra Rs 2 lakh over the existing petrol model. This will bring the starting price of the EV in the range of Rs 10 lakhs and above, thereby making it significantly cheaper than the Nexon EV Prime.

There’s a lot we still don’t know about the Punch EV. But it is clear that Tata Motors will strengthen its significant hold in the Indian EV market with the arrival of the new mid-size electric SUV. The company’s latest electric car, the Tiago EV hatchback, has been a success, and the automaker hopes to do the same with the upcoming Punch EV.
