SUN Mobility, a provider of electric vehicle energy infrastructure and services, will set up 320 battery exchange stations across India over the next few months, making its national network 500 strong by March 2023.
With this expanded network, the company – founded by Chetan Maini or the man behind India’s first Reva electric car – aims to make around 30,000 exchanges per day by March 2023 compared to 11,000 currently.
The news comes less than a month after it opened a new Bengaluru factory capable of producing 200,000 batteries a year.
Of the 320 new battery exchange stations, about 200 will be in Delhi, while Bengaluru will have 80 new ones, said Anant Badjatya, chief executive of SUN Mobility.
The company, which provides everything including swappable batteries and battery exchange stations for two-wheelers, e-rickshaws and four-wheelers for light transport, is committed to serving 10 million electric vehicles by 2025 as part of its “Million Mission” initiative.
“An important part of it all is our partnership. SUN Mobility comes in as an ecosystem builder,” said Maini. It has tied up with car manufacturers such as Piaggio, Hero Electric and Greaves Electric Mobility; Energy distributors Indian Oil Corp Ltd and Tata Power; and 25 ship partners including Zypp, Amazon and Uber.
“My previous journey was about building cars,” Maini said. “I think here, if you want to do something at scale, it is necessary to create an ecosystem of partners.”
Currently the company has about 180 exchange stations spread across 18 cities.
In the shipping segment, while SUN has 10 exchange stations located in Amazon warehouses in six cities, it has received interest from the e-commerce giant for 1600 such stations, Badjatya said.
