SUN Mobility plans to build 16,000 battery exchange stations with 2,40,000 batteries, allowing more than 3 million swaps per day, to achieve its goal of getting 1 million electric cars with batteries in 2025. According to the company, it will set up 500 exchange points and 40,000 batteries by FY23 and 3,000 exchange points and 3,00,000 batteries by FY24. Currently, it has 7,000 EVs in the network and 182 stations across 18 cities. The organization has tied up with more than 10 OEMs including Hero Electric, Piaggio; Carriers- Amazon, Uber; shared mobility providers; Power Distributors – Indian Oil, Tata Power etc.

Buses and trucks

In addition to existing solutions, SUN Mobility has also developed battery swapping technology for buses and trucks, which it intends to launch by the middle of the next financial year, said Chetan Maini, co-founder and chairman, SUN Mobility.

“One station will have 17 batteries and it will take 3-4 minutes to change the batteries. It is a completely robotic station that takes a day to set up. We have run a pilot program for one year for this in Ahmedabad and will launch the same in these stations by the middle of next year, “he added. According to Maini, a person will pay for what is used – which will be about 20 percent less than diesel and LPG.

Battery production

The company recently opened its newest manufacturing plant in Bengaluru, increasing annual production from 67,000 battery packs to 2,00,000. “Going forward, we will expand this plant to produce 2,80,000 units by the middle of next year,” the CEO said.

Established in 2017, SUN Mobility is a joint venture between SUN Group and Maini Group. The company was co-founded by Chetan Maini, founder of Reva Electric Car Company which is now Mahindra Electric, Uday Khemka, Vice Chairman of SUN Group, and Ajay Goel, Co-Founder and Managing Director.
