The Maharashtra State Electricity Workers’ Union, representing 30 organizations, on Monday staged a protest at the Mahavitaran office in Wagle Estate against the alleged privatization of the state and the supply of electricity to Adani in the Thane-Navi Mumbai region.
Simultaneous protests by employees of Mahavitaran or Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited, Maharashtra State Electricity Generation Company Limited, and Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited were held at Prakashgad offices in Bandra, Dharavi and Vashi.
“This is just the beginning. We have organized several activities – from protest marches to the morcha to Vidhan Bhavan in Nagpur to indefinite protests – in the next one month,” Lileshwar Bansod, joint secretary of the union, told HT.
On December 19, the union planned a protest across the state. “We will return the mobile SIM card provided by the company, and no phone calls as part of non-cooperation with the management,” Bansod said.

All of this is aimed at bringing about privatization in the state’s public utility system and Adani Electricity’s entry into the profitable region of Bhandup is its starting point. We are strongly opposed to this,” said the union’s spokesperson.
The new bill amends the Electricity Act of 2003 and some important provisions allow multiple discoms in the same area, remove the requirement for discoms to distribute electricity through their own network, which allows them to provide access to their network by other discoms, and allow sharing of power and related costs. between multiple license holders and others.
Adani Electricity Navi Mumbai Limited, a 100% subsidiary of Adani Transmission Limited, has applied to Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC) for electricity distribution license for Mulund, Bhandup, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Panvel, Kharghar, Taloja and Uran.
Section 14 of the Electricity Act 2003 empowers MERC to grant two or more licenses within the same area of supply. Similar parallel distribution licenses already exist in Mumbai where Adani Electricity, BEST, and Tata Power compete for power supply. Adani Group has offered ₹Investing 5,700 billion kip to expand its own distribution network and is expected to provide a choice of energy suppliers to approximately 5 million consumers.
