Spotify CEO says Apple “gives itself all rights”

Spotify CEO Daniel Ek has hit back at Apple amid threats by the iPhone maker to remove the Twitter app from the App Store. Ex charged Apple gives itself “all rights” and “restricts innovation and hurts consumers.”

Spotify and Apple have been in a legal battle for years, and the music streaming app has previously criticized Apple’s App Store policies. Last year, the European Commission voted on Spotify and reinstated Apple on non-competitive practices. Spotify is teaming up with Elon Musk and Twitter to challenge Apple’s policies.

Ek mentioned in his 2019 blog post, where he criticized the App Store policies and said that the iPhone maker is hurting the competition and consumers. In a 21-tweet long thread, the Spotify CEO also mentioned some of the most important business leaders and companies affected by Apple’s actions, including Elon Musk, Microsoft, Epic Games, and the founder of Proton Andy Yen.

“So how long do we have to watch from this threat to the future of the Internet? How many consumers will be denied the option? There are many conversations. It is helpful to talk but we need to the job.” said Ek.

Spotify & Twitter have a bone to pick with Apple

The dispute between Apple and Twitter began after Elon Musk announced that Apple threatened to remove the Twitter app from the App Store without giving any reason.

The world’s richest man renewed his attack on Apple on Monday over the App Store’s 30% discount on in-app purchases. Musk shared one of his famous memes, saying that he would rather go to war than pay Apple. Musk reportedly spoke with European Commissioner Thierry Breton about the issue. Of course, the two CEOs met to solve the problem, and the European Commission did not need it.

Apple did not respond to Ek and Musk’s tweets, but they said they used the 30% fee to protect consumers from fraud and increase privacy. The iPhone maker is facing criticism from US politicians, such as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, on threats to remove Twitter from the App Store.

Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney, whose game Fortnite was removed from the App Store, called fighting Apple’s monopoly is “an American problem rather than a political one.”
