Winter is arriving across the UK as overnight temperatures are expected to drop to -10C in parts of the country, with fog, frost and snow forecast for some areas.
The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for parts of Wales, Northern Ireland, the east coast of England, northern Scotland and the Western Isles.
Temperatures are forecast to reach near zero during the day on Wednesday as arctic air moves in, freezing overnight. Overnight lows of -6C will remain in icy areas of rural Scotland and rural England.
Rain is forecast for northern and eastern parts of the UK, with snow beginning to fall on the hills of northern Scotland. Elsewhere, it will be sunny but it will still be cold and it will be frosty overnight.
Ollie Claydon, of the Met Office, said: “We’ve been in colder conditions each day with a north-easterly flow, but conditions are set to get colder throughout the week, with the worst of the rain in northern Scotland. Even colder conditions across the UK.”
He said the weather will remain cold until the weekend, but there are signs of warmer weather moving into the south-west from Tuesday next week, although the north will remain cold.
On Wednesday night and Thursday, there will be widespread frost with icy surfaces in places as well as sleet and sleet across northern Scotland and parts of northern Ireland, northern Wales and eastern England, which may result in travel disruption.
The UK’s Health and Safety Executive issued a cold weather warning from Wednesday evening and recommended that people warm their homes to at least 18C (64.4F).
Age UK advises to keep a supply of food and medicine to reduce the number of outdoor trips, and carry torches with spare batteries in case of power cuts.
The Met Office said on Twitter: “If you haven’t already, time to dig out the winter hats, gloves and scarves – because Wednesday looks chilly.”
