Shrewsbury has emerged as the second most popular destination for a winter stay, according to research based on social media data – news that has been welcomed by the town’s business community.
Mike Matthews, chairman of Shrewsbury BID and owner of the Prince Rupert Hotel in Butcher Row, said Shrewsbury is a magical place in winter.
“I may be biased, but I’m not surprised Shrewsbury was ranked so highly in this research, as it really comes into its own at this time of year,” he said.
“We have many guests at the hotel who like to come to Shrewsbury during the winter to explore the narrow streets, closes and avenues of the town center and of course the abundance of cozy bars, cafes, restaurants and shops.
“The overall shopping experience in Shrewsbury has become a great reason to both visit the town and stay overnight. In particular our abundance of independent shops offer something unique to any other town centre.
“When you add the Christmas lights and festive atmosphere, it’s easy to see why Shrewsbury stands out as one of the UK’s most picturesque towns for a winter visit.”
Research by heating company, Stelrad, used Instagram statistics to find the top-rated destinations in the UK for the winter season.
The company cited Fine & Country, Sykes Cottage, Snap Trip, Country & Townhouse, The Guardian and Scotsman to compile a list of 50 well-known “picturesque and wintry” towns and villages across the UK.
The researchers then ranked each location based on the number of hashtags on Instagram.
To determine how picturesque each location is during the cold, winter months, the towns were then analyzed on Instagram to find the most photographed locations.
Rounding out the top 10 were Harrogate, Shrewsbury, Dover, Keswick, Stratford-upon-Avon, Llandudno, Buxton, Newburgh, Conwy and Ambleside.
