We get a real-world, side-by-side look at how the new Mustang has grown on the old one.


The 2024 Ford Mustang The S650 is just around the corner from hitting showroom floors, and the S550 Ford Mustang is almost ready to hang up his hat. That’s not a secret anymore Ford has been rolling out test mules of all kinds, from the everyman’s EcoBoost to the track-built Dark Horse, but we finally have a clear look at the upcoming pony car that greets its senior.


Thanks to a post from respected forum, Mustang7G, we get a peak at a fairly ordinary, current-generation Mustang EcoBoost sitting shoulder-to-shoulder with an undisguised Dark Horse test car. Although not revealed, it can be assumed from the weather and road dirt that this photo is not far from the factory in Flat Rock, Michigan. So let’s break down some real-world differences between the two eras of muscle cars.

The 2024 Mustang Has a Slightly Smoother Design

It’s not an apples-to-apples comparison, with one being an EcoBoost and the other a Dark Horse, but it’s a decent peek at how the design language has evolved. One thing that can be inferred off the bat is a return to form for the headlights, which use a straight, slightly canted shape similar to the pre-facelift S550 Mustangs produced from 2015 to 2017. The GT350 and GT500 retain the same style of lights throughout their production run.

The overall appearance of the bumper is a bit smoother than the 2018 to 2023 cars, with a wide lower grille area inspired by the Mach 1 and GT350. Although the GT’s fascia is different than the Dark Horse’s, the lower grille area is the same. Additionally, the EcoBoost and GT Mustangs have body-colored strafes dividing the lower grille, while we see them in gloss black on the Dark Horse.

One point of equal parts interest and controversy has been discussed since the S650’s debut, and that’s the singular, centrally-mounted hood vent. Some enjoy its motorsports vibe, while others criticize it for being too Camaro-like. But, whether you enjoy it or not, it’s here to stay on all S650 Mustangs except the EcoBoost, which will provide a clean, unvented hood. By contrast, early Mustangs always rocked two small, longitudinally-angled hood vents.

2024 Ford Mustang Going On Sale Soon

Fortunately, it won’t take long to get a new Mustang of your own to drool over. In another post from Mustang7G discussing a timetable from Auto Forecast Solutions, the new car is set to go into official production in March 2023. Order banks are set to open around the same time, with orders aiming for delivery in the summer.
