In an effort to save lives and make Delhi’s roads safer for all, the SaveLife Foundation (SLF), with the support of Tata Power Delhi Distribution and in close collaboration with the Delhi Traffic Police, Delhi Transport Department and PWD (North) has launched. Experimenting with Tactical Urbanism at Mukundpur Chowk.
According to the Delhi Traffic Police, the intervention area at Mukundpur Chowk where the Urban Tactical trial was implemented witnessed 32 serious accidents between 2017 and 2021, resulting in 10 deaths and 35 injuries.
What is Tactical Urbanism?
Tactical Urbanism (TU) trials are temporary, rapid and relatively low-cost interventions that test urban design, transport planning and infrastructure changes to improve road safety for all road users, especially the most vulnerable such as pedestrians, cyclists and others. Motor transport users. Once the interventions are proven, the relevant government agencies are expected to make them permanent.
As part of the Zero Fatality Corridor (ZFC) initiative, the SaveLife Foundation tests temporary urban design interventions. An important element of these experiments is the distribution of road space to ensure modular equality, modifying the geometry of the road, traffic channels, reducing the speed of vehicles, and increasing the safety infrastructure of pedestrians and drivers.
Talking about the immediate need to support such interventions, the spokesperson of Tata Power Delhi Distribution Company said, “Road accidents are a major cause of concern across the country. The loss of life and livelihood witnessed as a result of road accidents requires immediate attention and innovative solutions. Through this association with SaveLife Foundation to help introduce innovative interventions at Mukundpur Chowk, we hope to make the long road safer for all types of vehicle users in the long run.”
Despite the fact that Mukundpur Chowk is a roundabout, it does not operate as one. Two existing U-turns make this intersection heavily trafficked from the Majlis Park subway station. The intersection is expected to gain more footfall in the future due to the upcoming Delhi Metro station.

Major interventions performed at Mukundpur Chowk
A major intervention part of the initiative at Mukundpur Chowk includes traffic calming measures such as rumble strips, and conflict zone markers placed before turns to help warn motorists and reduce speed. Other interventions include improving vehicle flow by means of geometric design solutions using barricades and cones. For public transport users, the intervention includes the introduction of dedicated bus stops and intermediate public transport stops near intersections for easier and safer boarding and lighting.
Tactical’s new urban design at Mukundpur Chowk has led to a 72% reduction in footpath distance and a 121% increase in pedestrian space.
To improve the safety of pedestrians and cyclists, pedestrian crossing distances and light lengths have been reduced by providing the shortest route to cross the intersection. Other measures include continuous pedestrian protection, widening Divided and safe pedestrian crossings as well as the installation of road signs. The month-long experiment will end on December 17.

This redesign at Mukundpur Chowk has led to a 72% reduction in pedestrian contact time and a 121% increase in pedestrian space. This is the 6th urban strategy pilot in New Delhi, with the previous 5 being conducted At Bhalswa Chowk, Rajghat intersection, Gandhi Vihar, Burari Chowk and Signature Bridge.
