Samsung doesn’t just make smartphones, it also makes networking equipment that the phones attach to. In fact, it is one of the largest manufacturers of telecommunications equipment in the world. Today, the company announced that it will start manufacturing 4G and 5G telecom equipment in India.
According to the Economic Times, the South Korean company plans to invest INR 400 million ($49 million) in its manufacturing facility in Kanchipuram, Tamil Nadu, India, to manufacture equipment for 4G and 5G telecommunication infrastructure. This is the first time that Samsung has invested in the manufacturing of network equipment in India. Samsung Networks will now join Ericsson and Nokia in local manufacturing in India.
The company already has one of its largest smartphone factories in the world in Gurugram, India. The company also makes televisions and plans to make OLED panels for smartphones in the country. With this investment, the South Korean firm can apply for India’s Manufacturing Linked Incentives (PLI) scheme, which offers incentives ranging from 4% to 7% to encourage local electronics manufacturing.
Samsung has already received the approval of the Indian government (Secretariat of National Security) as a reliable source of telecommunication equipment. This seal of approval is required in India before any company manufactures telecommunications equipment in the country. Samsung Networks has already received orders from two of the largest telecom operators in India: Bharti Airtel and Reliance Jio.
