Roald Dahl’s Matilda The Musical Sony leads the pack at the UK-Ireland box office this weekend, with £4.1m from 668 locations.
This meant an average of £6,138, beating its recent Sony family musical stablemate. Lil, Lil, Crocodilewhich took £1.7m in its October opening weekend with an average of £2,756.
The BFI London Film Festival (LFF) opening night film is directed by Matthew Warchus, with Denis Kelly writing and Tim Minchin composing, and based on a stage musical created by the same trio. Working Title produces, Netflix will release in the rest of the world from December and in the UK in the summer of 2023. Emma Thompson, Stephen Graham, Andrea Riseborough and Lashana Lynch star in the role of newcomer Alisha Ware.

It grossed £2,346 (£293 average) over the weekend, but with an overall figure including Wednesday’s live screenings of £155,353. The distributor took £112,339 from 313 sites on Sunday alone for Adam Penford. A Christmas Carol: A Ghost StoryFilmed live at London’s Alexandra Palace Theatre, starring Mark Gatiss, averaged £359.
Elsewhere, Cannes titles continued their run at the box office with Mubi Afterson, starring Paul Mescall, enjoyed a respectable second weekend at the box office, taking £110,184, bringing its cumulative figure to £489,924. Ruben Ostlund’s Cannes Palme d’Or winner Triangle of Sadness It grossed £54,106 in its fifth weekend. His total for Lionsgate is £1.2m.
Lionsgate also took in £29,030 for horror Hunt for the devilFor an overall figure of £2.3m.

Universal’s Permanent Animation Minions: Rise of Gru In its 22nd season, the weekend was down 67% with a take of £18,155 and a cumulative figure of £46.8m.
The legend of Maula Jatt Moviegoers Entertainment took £12,661 in its seventh weekend, bringing its total to £1.4m.
The Woman King eOne took £11,000, down 58% on its previous weekend. After eight sessions, the total is now £3.8m.
Trinity Films The Sparring Partner It grossed £6,476 in its second weekend, bringing its total to £72,348.
In its second week, the Cannes premiere directed by Universal’s James Gray Armageddon time It brought in £5,664 for a total of £130,439, down 91% on its opening.
New Wave Films’ What do we see when we look at the sky? Earned £1,665 from five sites, averaging £333, in its first weekend.
of Conic Utama – Bolivia’s international Oscar feature contender – took £1,305 from six sites in its opening weekend, averaging £218. Alejandro Loiza Gresi’s debut feature won the Grand Jury Prize in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition at Sundance this year.
Thomas Laws’ silent film was also released this weekend Amaryllis For Munro Films, Met Film Distribution’s Sundance premiere nanny, and a 70th-anniversary re-release of French director Jacques Baker Cask d’Or For ICOs.
