The recently announced 48-hour rail strike will make things difficult for the general public. Unfortunately, there comes a time when bus drivers and road workers also join the strike. Network Rail has urged passengers to travel only in emergencies due to reduced services. Passengers across England, Scotland and Wales are affected by the strike.
Amid the strike, RMT chief Mick Lynch says a deal between the union and employers could be possible if some conditions are improved and better pay is promised. It raises hopes among commuters as more strikes are to be announced from 6pm to 6am on Christmas Eve till 27th December.
On the other hand, members of the Transport Salaried Staff Association accepted a deal with Network Rail for a 9% pay rise over two years. However, more than half of RMT workers have rejected the same offer.
Transport Secretary, Hugh Merriman, has urged workers to reconsider the offer and end the strike. He said this would benefit the rail industry, economy and people. They were looking forward to celebrating with their loved ones after more than two years due to the pandemic.
To add to the woes, National Highway Traffic Officers and bus drivers in south and west London will also observe the strike. The workers’ union accused management of paying the lowest wages for bus drivers in London.
