Approval for the installation of mobile poles

The Government of India has sanctioned INR 26,000 (Twenty Six Thousand Indian Rupees) for the installation of 25,000 (Twenty Five Thousand) Mobile Towers in 500 (Five Hundred) days across the country. A spokesman for the telecom ministry said the project will receive financial support from the Universal Service Obligation Fund and will be implemented by the Bharat Broadband Network. DoT urges mobile device manufacturers, telcos to roll out 5G updates

Department of Telecommunications (“DoT”) invited mobile device manufacturers and telecommunications companies on October 12, 2022 to discuss complaints that have been launched regarding the delay in the release of updated software patches over the network by phone companies, which will allow users of phones with access to 5G recently introduced a favor.

Although 5G is available in several cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, Chennai and Varanasi, telecom companies claim that customers with 5G phones are not getting service on their devices. Smartphone makers, on the other hand, have hit back at telcos, citing limited coverage due to a limited number of 5G towers in operation as the cause of the problem.

Minister Ashwini Vaishnav recommends telecom companies to install at least 10,000 (ten thousand) 5G towers per week

Minister Ashwini Vaishnav stated that telecom companies should increase the number of 5G towers installed every week to at least 10,000 (ten thousand) per week.

He also stated that the government is ready to give telcos all the necessary policy support as they scale up their 5G infrastructure, but the rate of 5G rollout must be maintained.

Companies approved by DoT for PLI scheme

The DoT has approved 42 (forty two) companies to receive benefits under the Design Based Manufacturing Incentive Scheme (“PLI scheme”) for the production of telecommunications and network products.

The PLI scheme is essential to strengthen the value chain of various 5G equipment verticals. India primarily relies on imports for them. According to the DoT, the companies have pledged a total investment of INR 41,15,00,00,000 (Indian Rupees 4 thousand one hundred and fifteen crores). In addition to the current incentives for products that are designed and manufactured in India, the scheme offers an additional incentive of 1%.

The government announced the PLI scheme last February and allocated INR 1,21,95,00,00,000 (Indian Rupees 12 thousand one hundred ninety five crores) for the same. The duration of the scheme was extended by a year, and design-led manufacturing coverage was added back in May. The amended scheme included additional incentives worth more than INR 40,00,00,00,000 (Indian Rupees 4 thousand crores) as decided by the Centre. Essentially, the policy has been changed to focus on creating a robust 5G ecosystem.

Reliance Jio Announces Rollout of ‘True 5G’ Service in Delhi, NCR Cities

Indian telecom equipment companies to launch 5G trial for Palwal – Mathura railway

A group of Indian telecom equipment manufacturers has received approval from the Indian Railways to set up a 5G-based mobile communication network between Palwal and Mathura stations on a trial basis. A senior official of the Voice of Indian Communication Technology Enterprises said that members of the association will deploy 5G technology using the exclusive 700 (seven hundred) MHz spectrum band available to Indian Railways. A successful examination will help the members of the association to expand their business and benefit from the Indian Railways modernization plans of INR 5,90,00,00,00,000 (Indian Rupees Five Thousand Nine Hundred Crores).

Telkom has advised against installing 5G base stations near airports

DoT directed telecommunication service providers (“TSP”) not to install any 5G base station in the band 3,300 (three thousand three hundred) – 3,670 (three thousand six hundred and seventy) MHZ in an area of 2.1 km from the runway at all airports in India. The DoT has also directed TSPs to ensure that 5G base stations are tilted down to such an extent that 5G emissions do not interfere with radio altimeters, which allow pilots to understand altitude. Further, the DoT stated that these measures will be adopted by the TSP until the Directorate General of Civil Aviation ensures the replacement of all aircraft altimeter filters.
