Panaji: After the second domestic consumer, this time from Kasi district, received a wrong electricity bill of 75 million kip for one month’s usage, the electricity department called a meeting of the entire team to resolve the issue.
“We have taken this issue seriously and have held a meeting to resolve it immediately. The bill is being considered in detail,” said an engineer.
The error has been rectified, and correct bills of about Rs 2,500 have been issued to consumers for the period 28 September to 28 October.
The faulty list was uploaded to social media, with netizens calling it “neglect”.
“It was the mistake of the sales staff. A meeting of top officials was called, including representatives from Tata Power, and this was pointed out to them. We have decided to train our staff. Sometimes transfers happen and new employees are not familiar with the software,” an engineer from the area told TOI.
There are a lot of parameters that one has to enter into the SAP system, and a lot of information has to be entered into the system initially when the meter is replaced, the engineer said. “We are now doing more checks so that these errors can be avoided,” he added.
Defending the department, the engineer said it issues electricity bills of 7 million every month and about billions every year.
“This is a single event. It’s very rare that mistakes happen,” he said.
Another engineer said the error occurred when the consumption on the four-digit meter crossed the upper limit of 9,999 and the system did not recognize the new reading.
Last month Toi reported that a domestic consumer from Mandrem received an electricity bill of Rs 57 million for a month’s consumption of which his final bill was RS 1554.
Power Minister Ramkrishna ‘Sudin’ Dhavalikar at the time blamed minor missteps on the Diwali festival and the “lust for narkasur effigies”.
Due to fatigue, he claimed that the biller could not insert a decimal point.
