DUBLIN, November 24, 2022 /PRNewswire/ — The “India Telecom Industry Report 2023” report has been added to the ResearchAndMarkets.com’s offering.
India Telecom Industry Report, 2023-2028 includes a comprehensive overview of India market dynamics, market size, market forecasts, analysis, insights and key trends.
Globally, the telecommunications sector is proving to be a key and essential infrastructure service for national economies, with data infrastructure becoming critical in a connected world and likely to increasingly attract a new class of investors such as large infrastructure funds. The Indian telecom industry is expected to remain stable due to the defensive nature of the industry, amid political uncertainties and an uncertain economic outlook due to geopolitics and rising inflation.
Rising mobile phone penetration and rising fixed broadband usage among households will fuel future growth over the next five years. Mobile subscriptions and fixed broadband subscribers will continue to drive growth in the telecommunications sector in 2023-28. More than 800m people have become Internet users in the last six years and counting 200m More internet users are expected to come online in the next six years to 2028.
After expanding the market over the past 5 years, sustainable revenue growth is forecast until 2028, with growing FTTH, 5G usage and a diminishing impact of declining legacy voice and SMS revenues. Mobile revenue is now growing faster than mobile subscriptions leading to ARPU growth after 3 years of intense competition with the market moving to 4G.
Capacity from Indian operators is highly cyclical with mobile rollout leading to investment in line with the growth of the operator’s top line. Capital investment peaked between 2016 and 2018 as Jio built out its 4G mobile network and is declining in 2021 and will pick up again from 2022 to 2028 as mobile operators invest in 5G, ramp up their 4G coverage and increase capacity to meet strong data demand. The ratio of capital expenditure to GDP increased between 2015 and 2017 and started to decline from 2018 onwards.
The mobile telecommunications sector began to consolidate two years ago, with twelve operators in 2017. India now there are only four mobile network operators across the country in all 22 circles; Bharti Airtel, Vodafone Idea, Reliance Jio and BSNL/MTNL.
Average annual mobile revenue growth was lower than mobile subscription growth over the 2014-2020 period, highlighting the intense price war since the Jio market put pressure on ARPU, exacerbated by the decline in dual-SIM functionality, leading to to the low growth of mobile subscriptions. The 4G migration skippered by Jio and followed by Vodafone Idea and Bharti Airtel is driving higher ARPU growth for operators with the consolidation of the mobile market now largely over.
According to a benchmark study on mobile data prices, India has the lowest rate per GB of just a few cents per GB, while Australia and China had the biggest reduction in costs per GB mainly due to the increased amount of data in the plans while Singapore remains expensive.
The fixed broadband market is experiencing slow growth, mainly due to share loss by incumbent BSNL, followed by Bharti Airtel, Atria Convergence Technologies (ATC), Reliance Jio (including Den Networks and Hathaway Cable), Vodafone Idea through its subsidiary Yoo Broadband , all are now investing in full fiber networks. However, more competition is expected in the fixed broadband market with the entry of Jio with its residential broadband services which is likely to disrupt the incumbent BSNL but should also increase residential broadband subscriptions significantly. Fixed broadband penetration is projected to grow modestly as India investment in full fiber networks is slowly retreating with affordable packages and increased household broadband penetration.
