Epic has announced today that many games from its library of titles will lose access to online play and features. That’s because it’s shutting down servers and shutting down services for those games. The good news for Epic players is that this is only for its older titles. The games have decreased in number of players over the years due to their aging. This includes games like Rock Band 1 -3, Unreal Gold, Unreal Tournament 3 and more.
Epic said it is making this change because it is focusing on supporting Epic Online Services with its partner system. Not all online games use this system. And it’s easier for Epic to shut down services for these games than to support different systems. And that’s right. It is less work and can start one system for all its titles.
Epic won’t shut down online services until January 24. So there’s still time to enjoy online services until then. However, Epic has started to remove some games from stores and DLC purchases can no longer be purchased in-game as of today.
Most games, Epic says, will be played offline after the network is down.
Although online play and services for these titles are closed, Epic says that most of them can be played offline. So you can play alone or with local co-op if the game supports it. For example, Rock Band can be played outdoors and it supports local co-op. This means you can play with your friends if you are still playing the game. They should be in the same room as you right now.
The complete list of games that are missing from the online game is as follows. 1000 Tiny Claws, Middle Dance 1-3, Green Day: Band Rock, Band Rock 1-3, The Beatles: Rock Band, Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, Unreal Gold, Unreal II: The Awakening, Unreal Tournament 2003, Unreal Tournament 2004, Unreal Tournament 3, and Unreal Tournament: Game Of The Year Edition.
Epic has announced that it will also be shutting down Battle Breakers on December 30. Some players are skeptical of these changes that Epic is making, but nothing is permanent. And Epic is moving.
