NEW DELHI : Maharashtra, which accounts for about 20% of India’s pharmaceutical production, plans to set up a large drug park in Raigad district with an initial investment of Rs. ₹2,442 million to encourage production of raw materials for medicines in the country.

The Indian Drug Manufacturers Association (IDMA) has received a proposal from DR Gahane, Joint Commissioner of Food and Drug Administration of Maharashtra, to develop a bulk drug park in Raigad district. The park aims to develop a cluster unit for the production of bulk drugs.

“The estimated cost of building the park will be approx ₹2,442 crore, with central government funding ₹1,000 crores and the state government is investing ₹1,442 crore,” the Maharashtra FDA said in a statement. He reviewed the letter On the. The park will help India achieve self-reliance in pharmaceutical manufacturing, the letter added.

India’s pharmaceutical industry, the world’s third largest by volume, depends on imports of raw materials for drug production. For certain drugs, the dependence on imports is as high as 100%, and any interruption in supply can significantly threaten India’s drug security.

Core amenities at the proposed bulk drug park will include a shared wastewater treatment facility, solid waste management, stormwater sewers, a shared solvent storage system, and a safety and hazardous operations review center.

“We have received a proposal from the FDA from Maharashtra for narcotics parks in the state. For API we need land, good factories and wastewater treatment plants. The government will provide all these important things in the park at reduced prices and thus people will be encouraged to create a new product as all the existing companies have nowhere to expand,” said Daara Patel, Secretary General of IDMA. .

Maharashtra has attracted about 30% of FDI in the pharmaceutical sector in the past decade and is the leading exporter of bulk drugs and intermediates in India, accounting for about 20% of India’s exports. It also leads in vaccine production and is the only state with large pharmaceutical clusters in Mumbai, Tarapur, Pune, Nasik and Aurangabad. In addition, the country has facilities for the production of auxiliary chemicals used in key pharmaceutical products.

The Department of Pharmacy is implementing a scheme for the promotion of bulk drug parks with the aim of achieving drug safety and reducing dependence on imports. Under the scheme, the government offers funding for the development of shared infrastructure facilities for drug parks.

The central government has already started work on three drug parks in Andhra Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat.

Inquiries to a pharmacy department spokesperson did not elicit a response.

On the it was earlier reported that the central government had set up a high-level committee headed by Mansukh Mandavi, union minister for chemicals and fertilizers, to monitor the progress of the drug parks being set up in the three states.
