PHILADELPHIA — Nathan MacKinnon left the Colorado Avalanche’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers in the first period at the Wells Fargo Center on Monday due to an upper body injury.
MacKinnon, a freshman, went to the locker room with 8:13 left in the first. He appeared to be hurt after a shot that was blocked by the Flyers forward Scott Laughton moments before leaving the ice.
The Avalanche, who lost 5-3, announced during the second halftime that MacKinnon would not be returning. Coach Jared Bednar did not have another game after saying MacKinnon would return to Colorado with the team.
“[He’s] a guy who plays 25 (minutes) a night at any position, so you have to juggle everything,” Bednar said. “Do the best you can. You just have to keep spinning and find guys who give. … Men are going up. It’s a difficult thing. It’s been a tough one for us and it seems like it’s getting worse now. “
