Euro NCAP has published the last batch of results for 2022. All but three of the 14 tested models were five-star earners, including the Lucid Air, VW ID. Buzz, Ford Ranger / VW Amarok twins, Lexus RX, Mercedes GLC, along with the Chinese Chery Omoda5, Maxus Mifa 9, and MG 4.
Starting with the Lucid Air, the automaker’s first production EV did well in all tests achieving a five-star rating even though it scored lower than rival Tesla Model S among adult occupants (90% over 94% ), poor road users (78% more than 85%), and safety assistance (84% over 98%), with an equivalent score to children living (91%). Euro NCAP praised the premium electric sedan for its safety features.

Vans and pickups fared worse than conventional passenger cars in Euro NCAP tests but this no longer seems to be the case. The VW ID. The Buzz scored an impressive 92% in adult occupants, 87% in child occupants, and 90% in safety equipment, with a below average 60% among vulnerable road users not enough to knock it out of the five-star rating. Other cars with bad safety reputations are those coming from Chinese automakers. This stereotype has now been dispelled, as most Chinese-made models have proven to be as safe as their European, Japanese, and US competitors. This batch of Euro NCAP testing includes the Chery Omoda5 SUV, the Maxus MIFA 9 minivan, and the MG 4 electric hatchback. They all earned the highest safety rating of five stars.
Predictably, among the five-star earners are three premium SUVs – the Lexus RX, the Mercedes-Benz GLC, and the Land Rover Discovery Sport. The Lexus RX is the largest of the three in terms of footprint and does well with 90% in adult occupants, 87% in child occupants, 89% in vulnerable road users, and an impressive up to 91% in safety assistance. The all-new Mercedes-Benz GLC has similar scores to the C-Class sedan in terms of mechanics, with 92% among adults, 90% among children, 74% among vulnerable users road, and 84% in safety assistance.
Joining the VW Group models retested for 2022 after the VW Golf, the Skoda Octavia, which also benefits from a central airbag. Compared to the original 2019 test, the slightly updated 2022 model improved in the area of safety assistance, scoring 81% versus 79%. Because of the stricter protocols, other scores were slightly worse (86% over 92% in adult occupants, 84% over 88% in child occupants, and 68% over 73 % among vulnerable road users) but good enough for the Czech model to comfortably retain its five-star rating overall.
The only three models limited to four stars are the revised VW Touran minivan, Ford Puma SUV, and the all-new Peugeot 408 fastback. The rating of the VW Touran is actually surprisingly good for a model that was originally introduced in 2015. The Ford Puma on the other hand lost one star compared to the original tests when it came out in 2019, but we must remember that it is a small SUV that shares its underpinnings with the recently discontinued Fiesta.
The Peugeot 408 fastback may be a flagship of the French automaker’s range but its underpinnings are shared with the smaller 308 hatchback, which also gets a four-star rating. The design differences between the two models give the 408 better results among vulnerable road users (78% against 68%) while maintaining the same 76% among adult occupants, 84% among child living, and 65% in safety assistance. Another Stellantis model with a four-star rating is the Citroen C4 X.
This has been one of the busiest years for Euro NCAP, especially with the end of many automakers trying to be tested using current safety protocols. The reason for that is the upcoming update for 2023, which will bring more focus on vulnerable road users (motorcycles, cyclists, and pedestrians), making it harder for participants to achieve top scores.
