Electric vehicle joint venture Lima will launch a new e-bike scheme in Derby in spring 2023.
In total, 550 e-bikes are available to the council free of charge. The initial launch will see 150 e-bikes at key locations, with an additional 400 e-bikes to be rolled out at a later stage.
The council plans to reinvest funding provided by the Department for Transport (DfT), which was originally allocated to the scheme, to support cycling infrastructure in local communities and popular cycling locations.
Councilor Steve Hassall, cabinet member for regeneration, decarbonisation, strategic planning and transport, said: “I am delighted to announce that we will be welcoming this new fleet of e-bikes to Derby through our partnership with Lime. E-bikes are a great alternative to shorter car trips, providing citizens with a clean, convenient and cheaper transportation option.
“This scheme is another step towards our ambition to make electric transport more accessible within Derby and to achieve our goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2035.”
Lime will launch its latest Gen4 e-bike model at Derby, featuring:
– Range of 64 km with replaceable, replaceable batteries that will be monitored by Lime
– Built-in front and rear lights – with rear lights that illuminate when the bike breaks down
– Increased engine power to help drivers easily climb hills and restart when stopped/stopped at red lights or zebra crossings
– Phone holder
Hal Stephenson, senior PR manager for Lime UK, said: “We are delighted to be bringing our e-bikes to the Derby next year. Our new service will offer residents and visitors a new active and sustainable travel option for getting around the city.
“We look forward to working in partnership with Derby City Council, with our scheme supporting their wider plans to install more cycling infrastructure and reduce local reliance on cars.

The e-bikes will be available to hire through the Lime app and will cost £1 to unlock, then 17p per minute. Minute packages will be available for purchase, providing discounts on the standard rate.
Lime will also offer a 50% discount on the cost of e-bike rides for lower-income residents through its Lime Access program. The program allows eligible drivers, including existing concession pass holders, key workers, students and job seekers, with unlimited discounts.
