The Ontario Government wants to force municipalities to charge large development fees to various developers and corporations as a way to cut red tape, and encourage the construction of about a million homes, hopefully with lower prices, so they claim. The problems presented by this Bill 23 to the public, various local governments continue to appear. Like the Wynne Liberals before them, the Ford Government is offloading the costs of the bill to local governments.
Local governments rely on development and other fees charged to developing corporations. If these fees are reduced in any way the populations of different regions will be charged higher property taxes and a slew of regulatory fees to make up the difference within their budgets. municipality. Although Toronto does not pay property taxes like other municipalities, there has been an outcry from local politicians and city council. Local Governments will now shoulder the burden of lost revenue so Ontario’s central government can help profit-making corporations. Some land within the green belt is sold and often occupied by land grabbers/speculators and developers, and now the financial download implemented by Bill-23 will strain most municipal government budgets and their method of payment.
The Conservatives are showing how shortsighted they are, as well as their seemingly terrifying belief that the corporate world will do the right thing. And that is to build mass affordable homes. Furthermore, there is no real understanding of what Ontario needs, what is affordable housing, and what costs make a home affordable. Does the Conservative Government believe that corporations and developers will actually build affordable housing. So naive.
Developers are notorious price hikers while building housing on a shoestring budget. The actual material used is sub-par to what was used twelve years ago. Lumber that used to be 3/4 to 1″ thick is now half that thickness. Tradesmen under contract rush to build these homes, keeping to tight last-minute schedules. Are the Conservatives are working for Ontarians or for their friends in the business development sectors While this government is counting on their business friends to bring thousands to Ontarians, Ontarians can only hope that housing prices will will stabilize or decrease.
Hope Ontarians don’t hold their breath while waiting.
