Kentucky basketball postgame quotes
Kentucky vs. Louisville
RUPP Arena – Lexington, KY.
December 11, 2022
UK head coach Kyra Elzey
On a slow start during the Virginia Tech game and the Louisville game…
“Obviously we don’t want to start slow. That is not what we are trying to do and it is not our intention. You know, credit to Louisville, I thought they came in and played really hard. You know it only took us a minute to settle into a physical game. I thought after we adjusted in the second half, but it’s too long. It took us a long time to settle down.”
In addition to free throws, on a win or tie in each category…
“We have toughness and fight but at the end of the day you have to be disciplined. You know, we scored a run, but we put it at the free throw line too many times. So, 39 free throws, they make 33, a ball game. He’s just more disciplined defensively.
It will be a physical game on deciding the film…
“Anytime you play in a Power Five conference (game) it’s going to be a physical game and that’s part of it. That’s what we love, the competition. I thought we adjusted it down the stretch. We just have to put it together four more quarters and be more consistent.”
On what the game plan was to hold Louisville to one of 15 from the three-point line …
“Well, you know, we just talked about finding shooters, obviously all three of their guards are averaging double-figure scoring, you know, trying to play personnel defense, make sure we shut down shooters, that We did a good job there. I thought we made runs, had some good defensive stops when we needed them. But at the end of the day, like I said, we fouled too much. So, we have to go back, evaluate how we call in practice what we say in practice, and we learn from this game and continue to get better.”
On what it was like playing against his former AAU coach…
“I love coach (Jeff) Walz. I don’t like coach Walz when we play. I am a competitor that we are trying to win. You know, it’s so fun to watch him before the game. Apparently, it has had a lot of success. And I tell him, we gave him his great start with Kentucky Hustle. So, she learned from a great group of young women. But at the end of the day, we are competitors. It’s a competitive game that we’re trying to win, we came here to win obviously very disappointed that we didn’t. And all you can do from here is learn, grow, get ready for the next game.”
She thinks about where her team is and what she likes about what she’s got…
“What do I like about this team? We have fight, we have heart, I like our versatility, (we’re) able to play different lineups. I thought our freshmen really gave us Mimi (Amia) Jenkins and Kennedy. Cambridge, gave a punch off the bench today with Petty, what she can do when we can keep her out of foul trouble. To try to pound the ball inside for us and her finish consistently. We have the pieces we need. Now she It’s just a matter of putting it together.”

On the difficulty of losing this contest…
“It just sucks period. I honestly want to say that you never want to lose any game, but losing to Louisville in particular is pretty bad. I think this will all be bad.
Louisville defensive pressure in the first quarter …
“We found them and they’re going to play pressure and physical defense and I don’t think we matched their physicality and it showed in the first half. We talked about how we need to play hard. They played sharper than us tonight and I think it really showed. It was difficult to come back in the second half. “
On a slow start to the last few games…
“I don’t think there is any connection, I think we need to lock in from the start of the game. It can be a bit timid, it can play hard for some people for the first time in a rap that is just different. These are fixable things and we can see them as positives. We definitely don’t want to be a second half team or anything and we’ll definitely learn from that and move on and when we get to these big games we can finally put the pieces together.”

On applying pressure later in the game…
“I mean when we realized we were down we needed to turn up the heat somehow to make some kind of run to get back into the game. As long as it starts like that, it wasn’t necessarily a game plan. But you know, we were down so we had to turn up the heat.”
On the adjustments made in the second half to improve their scoring…
“Basically, just turn our defense on more so we can get more transition points and that’s where we’re very good. Basically, coach (Nia) Butts set up some plays to give us some good opportunities at the basket.”
Where they would love to play this rivalry game every two years…
“Rp. Without question.”
On how eager they are to get back on the practice court…
“Very eager, you know I hate to lose. Team, we are disappointed. We came here to win today and we have to improve on some things like rebounding. I know a couple of times the ball went over my head and I should have gotten the rebound. We are going to improve, take a look at the film again, try to improve and do better for the next game.”
