Both BSNL and MTNL have recently received relief packages of Rs 1.64 lakh crore from the government. Namely, the Indian government has been trying to revive telecom operators since 2019.
The government proposed a voluntary retirement plan, reduction of the number of employees, debt restructuring and merger of both telecom operators. However, the merger of BSNL and MTNL is not possible due to financial reasons.
Moreover, the center has decided to merge BSNL and BBNL for the ongoing BharatNet project, which means that both will work on the same and the former will get 5.67 million kilometers of optical fiber. Also, the telecom sector is expected to get another hit from FTTH services, which means this merger could be beneficial for BSNL.
