A former agent of the United Kingdom’s Secret Intelligence Service has warned of rogue operatives in the country who could exterminate enemies at the behest of Russia. According to sun, Former MI-6 agent Julian Richards said Britain’s intelligence agencies ‘do not know’ the exact number of sleeper agents in the UK spying for Moscow.
It is believed that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s main espionage tactic is to send spies into countries as regular citizens to gather valuable intel and pry the West out of its critical secrets. The threat of spies has the UK on its toes due to increased infiltration by Putin’s spies, with several former CIA and MI6 agents warning citizens to be vigilant.
“Either they’re very good at it, in which case there could be a lot of them that we don’t know about,” Richards told The Sun Online. “Theoretically they could kill somebody, if they needed to. This is where the Skripal case is interesting and the Litvinenko case before that. It was revealed that the GRU – military intelligence – was involved,” he added.
UK faces ‘huge problem’ of Russian espionage
“We know that the UK has always been a particular target for the Russians. They know that we are a potentially very useful link in the American intelligence system,” he clarified. According to Richards, crucial information is used by these ‘invisible’ spies. Blending into society, taking regular jobs and slowly climbing the social ladder.
“Either it’s a big problem and we don’t realize the scale of it and how many there are, but I think it’s not that big of a problem, and because it’s so hard to do, there probably aren’t that many of them out there. But there are some, Especially in the UK,” he said.
The former agent’s latest warning comes after alleged spies Sergei Skvortsov and his partner Elena Kulkova, who have been posing as regular citizens for years, were arrested in Sweden.
