Move towards controlling power cuts: Mahavt government sets up high-level committee to strengthen Strengthen the transmission and distribution network of Mumbai Avatar

Mumbai: After three major clashes in Mumbai that brought the city to a standstill in October 2020, February 2022 and April 2022, the Maharashtra government woke up and on Thursday set up a 20-member high-level committee headed by the chief secretary.

The committee will solve the problems faced by the electricity company in strengthening the transmission and distribution network. of the district in a timely manner and encourage coordination between the organizations.

13 special guests in the committee

Incidentally, the committee will have 13 special invitees which include representatives of MahaVitaran, Tata Power, Adani Electricity and BEST besides Collectors of Mumbai, Mumbai Suburbs, Thane, Palghar and Raigad, MHADA Vice President and CEO and CEO SRA. The presence of representatives of the government and these energy companies is important to avoid delays and remove obstacles in the implementation of improvements and strengthen the transmission and distribution network.

Mumbai electricity needs to increase

This is especially important when Mumbai’s electricity demand is expected to increase to 5,000 mw by 2025 from the current level of 2024-25. Mumbaikars may face load shedding if current transmission and distribution restrictions are not removed. The power outage caused by the collapse of the power grid has revealed the limitations of the cable infrastructure. Delivery and distribution available in the city.

The Central Electricity Board, State Electricity Board and the Ocean Electricity Regulatory Commission have strongly advised the transmission and distribution system. of the city has more strength so that electricity from outside can be brought in easily. In addition, there is less chance of tripping leading to power failure due to increased load. These committees also recommended that Mumbai’s insulation system should be reworked especially when there is a change in the load pattern.

Mr. SD Redekar, Deputy Secretary of the Department of Energy, in the government’s resolution, said that the committee will review the projects implemented by the electricity company. It is a phase to strengthen the transmission and distribution network to complete on schedule. In view of the restrictions on development of new power projects in Mumbai, the Commission will ask these companies to take necessary steps to transfer power through inter-state and intra-state transmission systems and to transmit electricity in bulk.

In addition, the committee will direct the state organization in the allocation of land for the establishment of substations and in the need to provide in the development plan of various departments including the urban development department and authorities. The committee will also request the BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation and the state government ministries to allocate land for the establishment of substations based on Enter GIS technology.

More importantly, the committee will be instrumental in obtaining initial approval from the Ministry of Environment and Forests, Salt and Railways and from the BMC, Public Works Department to lay cables and overhead. In addition, the committee will also take the necessary steps to resolve issues related to the right to Use.

A fire in October 2020 completely paralyzed the city.

It was due to the simultaneous outage of MSETCL’s sub-station at Kalwa, Kharghar that the frequency of the Mumbai transmission system dropped significantly resulting in reduced power supply.

In February 2022, the city faced another power failure

It is due to interruption of supply from Tata Power and also due to downing of 220 kV transmission line from Mulund to Trombay which resulted in the best consumers not getting power.

In April 2022 there was another power outage

It was caused by the shutdown of the entire 400 kV transmission line due to isolator problems after sparking was observed in the pantograph isolator.
