In the energy sector, things have changed rapidly in terms of energy production from thermal fuels and fossils to renewable energy sources, and the weight is being given to making our energy smarter. Anil Kolap, Director (Operations), Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company Limited, Government of MaharashtraThis was emphasized at the public health meeting of the Elets organization in 2022.
According to him, the challenge of integrating renewable energy into the grid is the most important and innovation. Technology should be researched to make the process effective.
He said that in Maharashtra, the wind is usually stronger during the rainy season when the demand is not high, but since the demand exceeds the power supply in the state, it is important to integrate those renewable energies into the grid efficiently. He then suggested that MSETCL could also look to integrate wind power.
Exploring the importance of energy exchange or efficient distribution and transmission of energy between states, he suggested that energy banking can be a good option. He said that due to the climate in the northern part of India, the demand is higher, while the state of Maharashtra has Low demand, so power can be shared between states. This approach can be important from a grid management point of view.

Talking about storing renewable energy for efficient use, he said that when the demand increases in Mumbai, this stored renewable energy can be used to meet the demand. For this, efficient battery storage, grid management and grid maneuvering must be taken care of. He said we can use emerging technologies such as analytics or AI/ML in this regard.
“We are planning to collaborate with SAS for data management and analytics to use SCADA data and inputs to accurately predict energy demand, so we can have effective load management and load forecasting,” he concluded.
